Excursion to Nigerian Army Museum

The Primary one and two pupils of New Capital School in Asokoro, Abuja, had their excursion to Nigerian Army Museum on the 23rd October, 2024. The excursion involved 55 pupils and 7 teachers. The pupils and the teachers got to the Museum around 10.30 am, on getting there the Army Officers who were assigned to address us were waiting and welcomed us to the Museum.

General Oloko told us that the Museum is free for people to visit. We were told that the Museum was established in 1956 at Zaria by the then Colonial Masters.  It was later relocated to Abuja in 2015.

We were equally informed that the Museum became digitalized in 2022.   The Museum, we were told is grouped into four sections, namely:

  • Digital gallery
  • Walkway gallery
  • Open air gallery
  • General Farouq Yahaya historical park.

We were also informed that the person who founded the Nigerian Army was John Glover.  He was on a journey by sea and got shipwreck at Jebba.  He got some ten hefty looking Hausa men to help him carry his loads on foot from Jebba to Lagos in 1863.   These men he later trained to form Glover Hausa Army.

The children were taken round various sections, where they were shown weapons that were used in the olden days such as bow and arrows, swords etc. Monies that were used in the olden days such cowries, coins etc.

The children were also shown the uniforms that were worn by various categories of the army officers. At the close of the excursion, the pupils were asked many questions after which they asked the Director, Brigadier A. A. Ahmed some questions too.

In conclusion, the tour was fun and very educative.   The pupils were very glad to have had the tour. They are looking forward to similar experience in the future.

We got back to school at about 1:55 pm. To God be the glory.
